All types of damp proofing membranes, rising damp & tanking systems
Damp Proofing Membranes
These are probably the most common systems used nowadays as they can speed up the process of installation greatly & are extremely long lasting with a number of finishing techniques compatible with them.
The membranes are fitted with specialised fixings which prevent damp penetrating through but allowing breathable channels behind the membrane. If required it can be fitted across the floor areas & right up to ceiling height on the walls with sump pumps fitted in more extreme conditions. The membranes can then covered to create a finish with the following techniques:
- Plastered directly onto like a standard wall.
- Dot & dab plasterboard with a skim coat or jointed.
- Batten wall out with timber or metal studs, plasterboard with a skim coat or jointed.
Damp Proof Injection
Damp proof injection courses can be fitted from the internal & external sides of the property. In some cases, both sides are treated together depending on the type of property & damp problem. This is a good way to deal with the rising damp issues as you are curing the problem directly at the source as often a lot of properties don’t have a damp proof course or it may have been compromised over time.
As well as fitting a damp proof injection course you will normally need to remove the internal plastering & re plaster using the following technique:
- Hack off plaster & clear away all debris.
- Treat with salt neutralisers.
- Fit new damp proof injection course.
- Apply a base coat of washed sand & cement with specialised water proofers.
- Apply 2x coats of Carlite Multi Finish plaster to create a smooth finish.
Tanking Systems
Tanking systems are popular in a lot of damp environments especially older properties. A tanking system is very similar to the membrane systems as in it creates a damp proof barrier. The only disadvantage to tanking systems is the installation time, as unfortunately no matter how many men you have on a job you simply cannot speed the project up because of the drying times required between coats / treatments.
Tanking systems are normally installed as followed:
- Hack off plaster & clear away all debris.
- Treat with salt neutralisers.
- Apply a base coat of washed sand & cement with specialized water proofers.
- Apply 2x coats of tanking slurry mix with 24 hour drying periods between each coat.
- Apply 1x coat of a specialized renovating plaster.
- Apply 2x coats of Carlite Multi Finish plaster to create a smooth finish.
“What People Say”
Jason explained all the different systems very clearly with their pros & cons. Followed by carrying out the works swiftly & with minimum mess, would definitely recommend.
Very honest damp survey, showed me exactly what was going on with his meter while inspecting the walls. Carried out the membrane works which has left our basement flat with fantastic walls, dry, warmer & no nasty damp smells or marks. Great work.
